The Master programme in Food and Meal Science enable students to use an independent, critical and cross-disciplinary holistic approach to work with research and development of food and meals for different groups. From the starting point of the meal consumer, relevant research will be reviewed in order for the student to deepen, broaden and update their knowledge, apply it in various activities, and participate in research projects.
Structure and content
The programme comprises 60 credits. The work placement is an elective course of 7.5 credits. The programme is taught online.

Optional specialisation through first or second cycle courses in Food and Meal Science theory, 15 credits, at Kristianstad University or another higher education institution.
These 15 credits may include a second cycle placement/internship, comprising 7.5 credits
- Master’s thesis, 15 credits
Students will develop their competence by acquiring methodological knowledge, skills, judgment and a scholarly approach within the courses The Complexity of Food Choice: The Public Meal from a Consumer Perspective, Applied Statistics in the Health Sciences, and Food for Many: Interdisciplinary Approach and Methodology. This basis will be complemented and built on through the optional specialisation within the field of Food and Meal Science.
The final component is the degree project, in which students will use both their method and subject expertise to develop their own questions and answer them through an empirical study.
Entry requirements and selection
Bachelor’s degree with the equivalence of 180 credits in a subject relevant to the main field of Food and Meal Science, including a degree project of at least 15 credits, or the equivalent, and English 6 from Swedish upper secondary school or the equivalent. English 6 is equivalent to - International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5. - Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test and a total score of 575; Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test and a total score of 90. - Cambridge ESOL: Certificate in Advanced English, Diploma of English Studies or Certificate of Proficiency
A student who has passed all the courses specified in the present programme syllabus will be awarded a degree of Master of Arts (60 credits) in Food and Meal Science.
